About the food of Bahrain

BA_007

NOTE: In the time it took me to write this post the temperature dropped ten degrees and fits of rain sporadically fell on Tulsa. Although cold, rainy days are perfect for writing, I couldn't help but think "Bah, rain." (I'm working on my mom humor, what do you think?) All 700 square km of the island Kingdom of Bahrain is in the Persian Gulf. Bahrain is made up of many islands (some sources say 33, others say 40). The name means "two waters" and refers to the country's water … [Read more...]

About the Food of the Bahamas

BF_001

Remember this part of Forrest Gump? [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhfK98f5S00] Well, in the Bahamas, seafood comes any (and every) which way you want it. The most popular seafood treats are the giant, snail-like conch, crayfish, shrimp, and the clawless spiny lobster. Take conch, for example. Typical food shacks keep live conch on hand, cleaning them for each order. Most menus offer boiled conch, crack conch (deep-fried), grilled conch, and steamed conch. Some customers eat … [Read more...]

While I’m Cooking: About Azerbaijan

Here's a 25 minute video all about Azerbaijan with great production quality. http://www.vimeo.com/10422538 I read the most fascinating fact in this article by Laura Kelley about Azeri food and culture: Like Georgia, Azerbaijan has a wide variety of climatic zones as well. In fact, nine of eleven climatic zones are represented, and in Azerbaijan one can simultaneously see all four seasons just by traveling from one end of the country to the other. High mountains, fertile foothills growing tea … [Read more...]

About the food of Azerbaijan: Happy Novruz!

aj_large_locator

I've been digging in the dirt lately, planting tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and peas. This is not the first year I've gardened, but this is the first year my seedlings survived long enough to be planted in the ground. Last year, out of 48 seedlings, only one lived long enough to eat from. Parsley. The rest died because I planted my seeds too early and was forced to wait to put them in the ground. Without adequate sunlight the seedlings became gaunt and gave up the fight long before they hit 2 … [Read more...]

About Australian Food and Tucker

AS_020

Let's play a little game. Imagine the United States. Cut out about 20% of the land. Now, say goodbye to 93% of the population. Everyone vanishes except the people of New York State. That's Australia. A massive country with very few people. *** 1. Australia is one of the world's greatest melting pots. Around 1/3 of this great nation is sand and wind. A literal melting pot, the scorching desert pushes almost 90% of the population to urban centers like Sidney and … [Read more...]

About the Food of Andorra: Andorra, the explorer

andorra

Giant evergreen shrubs make the best hideouts. Their tallest branches form umbrellas as they sweep down to the ground. When I was a little girl I used to push my way through the prickly needles until I reached the open area in the middle. I could play for hours without being seen. I loved my secret hideout. Andorra is a lot like the giant evergreen shrubs.  Tucked away in the middle of the mountains between France and Spain, Andorra survived for centuries without being noticed or … [Read more...]
