Happy One-Year Celebration! Plus our giveaway winner…

Sasha-and-ava

About a year ago I was in a strange place. I was a new mom. My hair was a mess. My eyes were crusty. I hadn't slept through the night for over a year - since about the time Ava started trying to push her bottom through my ribs. From the inside. Yawn. About this time I was also looking for purpose. Like deep, soul searching purpose. I got a haircut, but it didn't help. I wanted (needed) to make a difference at home and in the world. I had sweet baby Ava and my love & best … [Read more...]

Recipe: Callaloo

800.dominica.img_2936

Serves 4-6 Callaloo, a luscious green stew made all over the Caribbean, is one of *those* recipes. It's like chili in the US; everyone lays claim to having the "best" version. And every version was made by someone's mama, so you best not mess with it. This version is made by Ava's mamma - me. But.. unlike those other recipes, feel free to mess with mine. After all, I'm a novice Callaloo maker and still have a lot to learn. Given the limitations of supplies around these parts, I went ahead … [Read more...]

10 Fabulous Finger Foods from Around the World (a.k.a. Party Food)

armenia.800px.img_6119

I'd rather not eat pancakes if I have to use a knife and fork.  I much prefer tearing them into small, irregular pieces before dipping - just barely - into maple syrup and taking a bite. Licking my fingers completes the happy process. Yes... I love eating with my fingers (don't you?). And, from what I've read, I'm in good company around the world. Here's ten international, absolutely fabulous ideas to get you through this finger-lickin' party season. 1. Camarao Grelhado Piri Piri … [Read more...]

Getting started again!

Hello All! Thank you for your warm wishes and concern. Although I spent 7 days with a fever - always over 100F, and often 102-103F - I am fully recovered and feeling great! We'll be starting up our Adventure again tomorrow. Yay! :) Ava and Keith took wonderful care of me - stepping in with hugs, kisses, and cool wash cloths as needed - especially while on our mini vacation in Beaver's Bend. In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have gone out of town but I was just.... itching for a … [Read more...]

Doctor’s Orders

Doctor_Who_

Please take a tour through our archives this week. You can use the calendar on the right to read all the posts we've written, from the beginning of February! You can also look … [Read more...]

Recipe: Cambodian Grilled Eggs

800.cambodiaimg_6718

Makes a dozen eggs I met my match with Cambodian Grilled Eggs. My patience and sanity were pushed to the limits. Not one to take a beating, however, I salvaged what I could from this tricky recipe and ended up with twelve super tasty eggs. This popular Cambodian street food makes for a fun side dish at a barbecue. You'll be *almost* stress-free if you prepare everything a day ahead, saving the last step for the barbecue itself. Definitely DON'T make this dish last minute. You'll be … [Read more...]

Recipe: Grilled Corn with Coconut Milk

800.cambodiaimg_6625

Serves 4 Sweet and tropical, our recipe is inspired by Steven Raichlen's Planet Barbecue. His version adds sugar and other goodies to the coconut milk basting liquid. Our corn on the cob is a little simpler - basted straight up with plain coconut milk. The creamy coconut milk gives corn a mild tropical flavor - perfect for a summertime barbecue. Serve with extra coconut milk on the side, for those who like to slather on extra coconut goodness. Ingredients: 1 small can of coconut milk … [Read more...]
